Winter Break is quickly approaching, and it is a time for holiday cheer, spending time with loved ones, and of course, relaxation. Maybe you are going on vacation or have guests coming into town or maybe you want to use this opportunity as a chance to stop overextending yourself and indulge in some self-care. While these are great ways to spend your break, now is also a great time to take advantage of the additional time you will have on your hands. Here are few ways you can use this period to do everything you need to elevate your chances of academic success.

Finalize College Applications

Most regular admission college applications are due in January. Use your extra time this winter break to ensure that your application is polished and complete. Go back and double check what you have added to your application so far and if you need to, have your college advisor also look through it with you to see where you can improve or alter information.

Take a Practice Test

Sharpen your skills by taking a practice ACT or SAT test. Practice tests help you to become familiar with the type of content that will be on the actual test, so you can identify your strengths and weaknesses. With the SAT going digital, it would be an especially good idea to get some practice so that you can be made aware of the changes to expect and get a general feel of what the new version will be like if you plan on taking the SAT in 2024.

Update Your Resume

Right now is the time to ensure that your resume is as strong as it needs to be! Include any extracurricular activities, community service, and work experience. College admissions representatives also would be interested to see any leadership roles you have held. As a general rule of thumb, you want to keep your resume brief, but detailed, and professional. Be sure to proofread and edit accordingly.

Research Summer Internship Opportunities

For Freshmen, Sophomores, or Juniors, you can use this time to research summer internship opportunities. Get a step ahead by using your undivided attention to find an internship that works best for you. Seek an internship that aligns with your future goals and is one you can enjoy. For current college students, now is a great time for you to seek internship opportunities as well if you have not done so already. It’s a great way to gain experience and make your resume stand out when you enter the job market.

So although you may be tempted to spend the next few weeks scrolling endlessly on social media or simply hanging out, consider a few of these options that will help to set you up for success in the long run. You might get bored of waking up and “winging it” during winter break, but you’ll never regret prioritizing your academic goals and being prepared.  Happy Holidays and Happy Winter Break!
